Are you telling me this

Based on the nappy curls of my hair

They say you are pretty

But for a dark skin

Is that a compliment?

Are you forgetting my African kin

They say you are too ‘aggressive’

Why? Cause you defend yourself

Sorry that I’m too ratchet

Apparently I can’t speak up for myself

They say we aren’t smart

But forget all we did

We built up America

Hoping for better lives for our kids

But I say we are strong

Embodying courage all along

So when they say that we don’t belong

we just keep proving them wrong
